You should do more. It’s not about free work or being unpaid for your skills, it’s about supporting your community and making culture happen when there is no profit to be had.

Post Heritage Festival
8r4d After the #heritagefestival ends there’s almost always leftover batter. They can’t sell it nor return it, but they do their best to get it to a good home. Whoever will take a huge quantity of batter late at night and on short notice. Whatever is left, a few lucky volunteers may get a bucket to take home. Of course this then means breaking down 25 litres of batter into freezer bags and storing it for the winter, but better than it landing in a trash pile. #volunteering perks

Heritage Festival
8r4d Disaster! So the third day of the #heritagefestival ended up cancelled because a storm hit the site Sunday night and wrecked enough infrastructure—water, power, tents—that it was unsafe for the public. The city was in shock. This rarely happens. In fact I don’t ever remember a cancellation (except during the pandemic.) It was waiting on pins and needles all day to find out how we fared. But alas our crew finally got access late afternoon and tho the damage was minimal on our site, we still had our work cut out cleaning and tearing down the kitchen to wrap up for another year. #volunteering

Northlands-ish
8r4d August #longweekend approaches and with it the annual #heritagefestival where I’ve been #volunteering for nearly a decade making #crepes for the French pavilion. But you’re not French, you reply. Yeah, but my neighbours run the darn thing and we volunteer to support them. Once again I was down there a couple days early helping with setup: running extension cords, setting up the kitchen, hanging things, washing things, bossing people around because apparently I’m a senior volunteer now, huh?

Rainbow Valley
8r4d I was neither #running nor #volunteering but I did ride my #bike down to one of the turnarounds on the 5 Peaks #race course this morning where RM was manning a road crossing and waving some flags at the cars trying to show the runners who’s im charge. I mean, c’mon tho. I was there about an hour watching the race and another hour cycling there and back, about 15k round trip.

Breakfast
8r4d Almost every week for the last decade we make family #breakfast on #saturday mornings. Usually that takes the form of my epic chocolate chip #pancakes with all the fixings. But routinely we switch it up and alternate in either waffles or — in the case of today— #french #crepes (which I learned to cook while #volunteering at the Heritage Festival. It all adds up to deliciousness no matter how you do the math
